As co-founder of the Wing 2 Wing Foundation, Alys supports and facilitates many philanthropic activities that increase access to education, open entrepreneurial doors and preserves and promotes the natural environment of Appalachia. Additionally, Alys is passionate about her role and platform as the First Lady of Marshall University supporting women’s equality and empowerment. Her goal is the empower women in Appalachia and beyond to realize their full potential on whatever path they may choose.
As a certified mediator and licensed attorney, Alys Smith seeks justice for all, regardless of social or economic status. Since 2005, she has worked with several non-profits focused on education and adolescent counseling served as a mentor and as a CASA for young women. She also serves on the boards of the New Opportunity School for Women in Berea, Kentucky and the Education Alliance in Charleston, West Virginia. She is the founder of Better2Mediate, a firm that provides mediation services to people seeking conflict resolution as an alternative to litigation. She currently serves as a Guardian Ad Litem representing the best interests of children in abuse and neglect cases across West Virginia. Alys received her B.S. from The Ohio State University and a J.D. from the University of Akron School of Law.
The Wing2Wing Foundation provides increased access and support for education, entrepreneurship mentoring and investment, and works to help residents preserve and enjoy the natural beauty of Appalachia. Alys co-founded The Wing 2 Wing Foundation in 2019 alongside her husband, Brad D Smith. Alys is a dedicated mother of two adult children, Devon and Payton.
As an attorney, Alys spent her career working for the Ohio Attorney General, several law firms in Ohio, Connecticut, and New Jersey and as an in-house counsel for a manufacturing company in Georgia.
Alys Smith is the founder of a mediation business, Better2Mediate, in which she offers her mediation services to people seeking conflict resolution as opposed to litigation. In addition, she serves as a mediator in many Northern California courts and has privately mediated since 2012. Previously, Alys received a B.S. from The Ohio State University in 1983 and a J.D. in 1986 from The University of Akron School of Law. Beginning in 1986, she worked as a trial attorney for the Ohio Attorney General and for several law firms in Ohio, Connecticut, and New Jersey. In 2000 to 2002, she also worked as an in-house counsel for Hoover Manufacturing Group in Alpharetta, Georgia. Since 2005, Alys has worked in several non-profits in the areas of education and adolescent counseling, has served as a mentor, and has been a CASA for young Latina women.
Alys and her husband, Brad, are co-founders of a charitable foundation, Wing 2 Wing Foundation that focuses on education, entrepreneurship and equal opportunities for all in the overlooked zip codes, primarily in West Virginia and Ohio.
