Rotary Update with J Dan McCarthy

Dan McCarthy completed a 38 year career in the United States Navy on April 1st, 2007 and retired from military service as a Vice Admiral. His final active duty assignment was as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Fleet Readiness and Logistics. In this assignment, he was responsible for Navy-wide policy, programming, and resourcing for Fleet readiness, logistics, strategic sealift, Navy installations and environmental programs.
Dan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Oakland University and is both a distinguished graduate and distinguished alumni of the Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Management. He is a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College and a graduate of the University of Michigan Executive Education Program. He also holds a Presidential Honorary Degree from West Virginia University.
Dan’s military service was as a Supply Corps Officer. As such, he served in a variety of sea and shore duty assignments providing him extensive leadership, operational logistics, supply chain management and financial management experience.
Following his promotion to flag rank in November 1996, Dan served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Defense Logistics Agency; as Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Fleet Supply and Ordnance, U. S. Pacific Fleet; and as Commander, Naval Supply Systems Command and 42nd Chief of Supply Corps.
Following his retirement from military service, Dan established Silver Eagle Consulting, a firm dedicated to providing business and leadership consulting support to both public and private sector organizations. Dan’s consulting work supported clients such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing, IBM and various components of the Department of Defense. In addition, Dan acted as a Visiting Executive Lecturer at the graduate business schools of the University of Virginia, University of North Carolina and the Naval Postgraduate Schools during this period.
A lifelong Scouter leader, Dan became the Group Director of the Boy Scouts of America’s Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in April 2012 where he oversaw the operations of a 14,000 acre recreational facility whose growth is contributing to the economic development of southern West Virginia. Dan retired from this position in March of 2017 and has returned to volunteer status with the Boy Scouts.
Dan is married to Carol Ann McCarthy. They have three sons, all Eagle Scouts, each of which has gone on to successful careers of their own.
