April 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Elizabeth Simmons is the Curator of Art and Engagement at the Clay Center where she oversees the Juliet Art Museum. Simmons is responsible for organizing a diverse exhibition schedule, planning educational programming, and stewarding the permanent collection. She is a doctoral candidate in the curatorial track art history program at the University of Delaware, with an MA in art history from Indiana University and a BA from Miami University in Ohio. Originally from Huntington, Simmons has held many museum positions in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions including at the Cincinnati Art Museum; Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Princeton University Art Museum; the National Gallery of Art in DC; the Indiana University Art Museum; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; and the Huntington Museum of Art.

Specializing in Italian Renaissance and Baroque art in graduate school, she has become a generalist in art history, publishing essays on 19th century American painter Frank Duveneck, Dutch Golden Age still life prints, and Charleston artist Ellie Schaul. In her academic pursuits, she has conducted field and archival research both domestically and abroad, but prefers connecting with the public through museum work, seeking to make art accessible for all. Since arriving at the Clay Center in 2021, Simmons has curated 21 exhibitions including: The Floating World: Japanese ukiyo-e prints; Ellie Schaul: Reimagining the Familiar; Juliet Art Museum Invitational 2022; The Possible Dream: Collection Highlights Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Clay Center; and Food in Art. She has also overseen the acquisition of five new sculptures for the Susan Runyan Maier Sculpture Garden.
